Sales is a Process
I’m very excited about this because you can’t always be the only salesperson in your organization. As you grow, you’re going to need to have other people take on the realm of sales, and that’s okay. Even when a lot of it can be scary, you may find yourself thinking, “Oh boy, how do I train somebody to sell as well as myself?”
First things first. Believe that sales are a process. It is scripted.
Selling is the perfect job for anyone looking to flex their multitasking muscles and get creative. Even if you are convinced you haven’t got what it takes, I can assure you, as someone who wasn’t initially great at sales, that absolutely anybody has the potential to succeed. Once I got a system and a process in place, it became easy.
The Creativity of a Role Play
Now, you just can’t have the system and the scripting and expect your employees to do it and do it right.
You have to role-play. You have to make it easy for them to be successful.
With scripting, make sure it’s in a book. To make sure your ideas are organized, write them down, whether they are physical or digital. Keeping your schedule and processes in an easily accessible place can make all the difference. After all, when it comes time to reflect, you don’t want things to go missing. So come up with an efficient way to document and store your written work; don’t just rely on your memory.
You should teach them the script as you go. You should also practice different situations with them. This will help them be better at their job. Always do a debrief for any live sales conversations they have with a prospect. Talk to them about what they did well and what they could improve on.
Better to Have it on Print
Make sure that the sales process is printed out and in front of the salesperson, even during the sales conversation.
Before every sales call, I always ensure that I’m prepared for any situation. To do this, I make sure to print out a comprehensive list of questions and develop effective dialogue, ensuring nothing is overlooked when engaging potential clients.
It’s quite easy to do it and to tell the prospect, “I’m going to take some notes while we’re talking,” and you have everything right there in front of you and in front of the salesperson as well.
About an Employee of Mine
I had an employee early on when I left my fitness business for about a year and a half. I wanted an employee to take over the sales, but she said, “I don’t really want to do the sales because it’s really difficult for me.”
What we did was go through the process; we role-played, and by then, she was still a little hesitant to do the sales. However, having the process in place and despite not considering herself to be a salesperson, she still managed to close more deals than I did!
It’s an inspiring reminder that anyone can succeed in the world of sales if they put their minds to it.
As the old saying goes, employees are a company’s best asset. By taking the time to properly train your sales personnel, you can maximize their impact and improve your bottom line.
